DIWAPack from Voith Turbo for Power Class up to 300 kW

18-12-2006

Voith Turbo's Rail division only recently announced details of further innovative system solutions for railcars. Now, with the Voith DIWAPack, a complete drive package has come onto the market, which should provide growth in the power class up to 300 kW. Voith Turbo believes that the drive package is particularly suitable for light local transport railcars.

The core element of the new package is the DIWA.5 gearbox, of which Voith Turbo has sold over 13,000 units over the last few months to bus manufacturers worldwide. The main benefits of the DIWA.5 gearbox are its excellent reliability and its precise and smooth gear shifts. The intelligent shift program with shifting points that move depending on the load conditions has already proved its capabilities in thousands of buses. The DIWA is also proven for use in railcars and is used in one of the best-selling DMUs, the Regio-Shuttle RS1 from Stadler.

In addition to the DIWA.5 gearbox and diesel engine, the new DIWAPack consists of an under floor cooling system with charge air cooling, air compressor, silencer and the corresponding peripherals, including pipes, fresh air and fuel systems. Everything is integrated into a supporting frame unit. The well known VTDC (Voith Turbo Drive Control) is responsible for control and for communication between the components and the vehicle controller. The DIWAPack is mounted elastically on the vehicle body using Voith key bearings. Universal joint shafts and axle turning gears complete the drive chain. When it comes to choosing the diesel engine to be integrated, Voith Turbo focuses on specific customer requirements. The first standard version features an integrated six cylinder MAN 2876 engine that meets the Stage IIIA emissions standard.

With the DIWAPack, Voith is expanding its range of products for the rail industry. The launch of the DIWAPack means that there is now a complete drive system for new purchases and for remotorizing light local transport locomotives. Further advantages of the DIWAPack include its short and flat design, the easy to handle diagnostic options in the gearbox software, as well as extensive options for storing operating data.

The service friendly design of the drive package, the ease of access to the gearbox, an integrated monitoring function to ensure that overhauls are based on the condition of the gearbox, as well as the wide range of approved oil types that can be selected, mean that operators will benefit in terms of their future maintenance costs. In addition to the standard version, individual customer requirements, such as a roof cooling system, larger generator, an optional air conditioning compressor or a particulate filter etc. can also be met.

The DIWAPack rounds off the range of Voith-Powerpacks in the lower power sector. Using its series production bus components, Voith Turbo can now offer a drive chain for rail vehicles in the lower power class at a very attractive price.

Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG.

Voith sets standards worldwide for papermaking technology, power transmission, energy technology, and industrial services. Voith was founded on January 1st, 1867.
