08-02-2007 The
most advanced trolley buses in China, which combine the advantages of buses and
light rail lines, is now in trial use in the Binhai New Area, a major new economic
area in Tianjin. The
new tramline system, with an investment of RMB190 million (USD$24.26 million),
was initially constructed in February 2006. The line, totaling 7.86 kilometers,
runs across the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area from south to
north. The system will be formally put into operations this March after a trail
period. This
new type of light rail tramline, which was developed by French Lohr Co., Ltd.,
features energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and low noise technology which
provides fast and convenient service for passengers. The
Lohr Co., Ltd. said that the trolley cars use the world's most advanced technologies
in traction and brake systems: the vehicle uses rubber tires, its track is embedded
in the ground and the grooves are paved with high-tech gaskets. When the wheels
are rotating fast, vibration is minimal and there is little to no noise, all without
damaging existing roads. These high-tech trolley buses are being popularized in
Europe and this is the first time this type of trolley line technology has appeared
in China.
