from FAW Group reported that recently it announced several forthcoming mid- and
long-term design and engineering initiatives, outlining some of the company's
product development strategies that will play a major role during the 2008-2020
periods. "FAW
Group, which has historically attached great importance to innovation through
substantial R&D investment, will spend 13 billion Yuan (US$1.7 billion) over
the next eight years to enhance its competitiveness in the automobile, commercial
truck, and bus sectors. Of that amount, approximately 8.8 billion Yuan will be
utilized specifically for the development of new products. Another 2.5 billion
Yuan will be spent upgrading R&D-related software and hardware, while 1.7
billion Yuan will go towards funding over 200 new research and development projects",
said Zhu Yanfeng, president of FAW Group. Key technologies targeted by the company
for advanced research include Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) applicable to passenger
cars; High Pressure Injection (HPI), Unit Injection (PDE), and Variable Geometry
Turbocharging for commercial trucks and buses; and automotive electronics.
The FAW Group Engineering Development and Test Center, China's largest and
most extensive automotive R&D facility, is the country's leader in automobile
and commercial vehicle research. It stands alone in China in possessing both cold
and semi-tropical weather vehicle test facilities. FAW Group is a leading global
