Authorities in China say some 300,000 heavy polluting vehicles will be replaced or removed in Beijing over the next year, to improve air quality.

The official Xinhua news agency reports all heavy polluting vehicles will be banned within the sixth ring road by October next year.

Beijing's Environment Protection Bureau says air quality in the capital is worse at night due mainly to the large number of vehichles in the downtown area.
